Contra dancing is an authentic American traditional dance that is alive and well today. Unlike many forms of social dancing, contra dancing does not require special talent or skills. A 30 minute workshop before the dance begins is all you need to get started. You don't need a partner, either, as dancers change partners after each dance during the evening.
One of the great things about contra dance is that it is always done to live music, and there is a close connection between the music and the dance. The music provides the energy that drives the dancers.
A variety of musical styles are used in contra dance. Much of the traditional New England contra dance music is Celtic in origin.
