I had been painting abstracts for several years, brightly
colored geometric objects hovering in various spacial relationships, when
I chanced upon a workshop given by Michell Cassou and Stewart Cubley of
The Painting Experience Studio. Their process of painting directly from
feeling has completely captivated me and transformed my painting.
Sometimes, while I am painting, the experience can be totally meditative. It is like I am in a trance and I have no awareness of others in the room.
It is me and the painting, and somehow, as if by magic, I manage not to collide with anyone as I move back and forth from paints to paper. At other times, the
pain and sadness can be so intense that I will be in tears the entire time.
When I am painting, it is as if there is a force beyond me that is in control
of the brush. I do not need to know where I am going, I only need the willingness
to explore, the willingness to put the brush to paper. And it is through this willingness that the paintings emerge.
